Are Eyeglasses a Total Cure for Eye Problems?

Are Eyeglasses a Total Cure for Eye Problems?

“I’ll just get a pair of glasses and that will fix everything.” Many people believe this, and it’s easy to see why. Put on the right pair, and the world suddenly looks sharp and clear. But does that mean your eye problem has been cured?

The honest answer is: not always. Eyeglasses are a powerful tool, but they are a way of correcting vision, not a cure for every eye condition.

What Glasses Do Very Well

Glasses correct refractive errors, which happen when the eye doesn’t focus light precisely on the retina. These include:

  • Short-sightedness (myopia), where distant objects look blurred
  • Long-sightedness (hyperopia), where close-up objects can be difficult to see
  • Astigmatism, which causes blurred or distorted vision at any distance
  • Presbyopia, the age-related difficulty with reading and near work, usually from the early to mid-forties

For these conditions, the right lenses can give you clear, comfortable vision.

But Correcting Is Not the Same as Curing

When you wear glasses for a refractive error, the lenses help you see clearly while you are wearing them. They don’t change the shape of the eye or remove the underlying condition. Take them off, and your vision goes back to what it was.

Glasses also cannot treat or reverse many eye diseases, including:

  • Glaucoma, which damages the optic nerve and often has no early symptoms. Vision already lost cannot be restored by glasses.
  • Cataracts, where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy. The treatment is usually surgery.
  • Diabetic retinopathy, which affects the retina and requires proper medical care and blood sugar control.
  • Age-related macular degeneration, which affects central vision.
  • Eye infections and inflammation, which need appropriate treatment.
  • Amblyopia (lazy eye) and squint, which may need other forms of treatment, especially in children.

In these cases, glasses may still help you see better, but they are only part of a bigger care plan, and sometimes not part of it at all.

Common Myths, Corrected

“Glasses weaken my eyes.” No. Glasses don’t make your eyes weaker. Wearing the correct prescription helps you see clearly and comfortably.

“My vision is clear with glasses, so my eyes must be healthy.” Not necessarily. Many serious eye diseases develop with no change in how well you see, until the damage is advanced. Clear vision doesn’t always mean healthy eyes.

“Once I have my glasses, I don’t need to see an eye doctor again.” Prescriptions change, and eye health needs to be monitored. Regular check-ups matter even if your glasses seem fine.

“Cheap ready-made glasses are just as good.” Ready-made glasses are not tailored to your eyes. The wrong prescription can cause headaches, eye strain and discomfort, and a pair bought without an examination can hide a problem that needs attention.

Why a Comprehensive Eye Examination Matters

A proper eye examination does more than determine your prescription. It checks the health of the whole eye, including eye pressure, the lens, the retina and the optic nerve. That is how problems like glaucoma are caught early, before they cause permanent loss of sight.

Glasses are an excellent solution for many people, and we are glad to help you find the right pair. But they work best as part of regular, professional eye care. If you have noticed changes in your vision, eye pain, redness, or difficulty seeing at night, don’t assume glasses alone will solve it. Come in and let us examine your eyes properly.

Blindness Awareness Month: Early Action Matters

Blindness Awareness Month: Early Action Matters

Have you ever wondered whether a small change in your vision could be an early warning sign of something serious?

Many people ignore blurred vision, difficulty seeing at night, or gradual changes in their eyesight, assuming these problems are simply part of ageing. However, some causes of vision loss can be prevented, treated, or managed when identified early.

During Blindness Awareness Month, let’s remember one important message: early action matters.

What Causes Vision Loss?

Vision loss can result from several eye conditions, including:

  • Glaucoma: Can damage the optic nerve, often without noticeable early symptoms.
  • Cataracts: Cause clouding of the eye’s natural lens.
  • Diabetic retinopathy: Can damage the blood vessels in the retina.
  • Age-related macular degeneration: Affects central vision.
  • Uncorrected refractive errors: Can cause blurred vision and may interfere with everyday activities.

Some conditions develop gradually, while others can cause sudden, serious changes in vision.

You do not have to wait until your vision becomes blurry before visiting an eye care professional.

Some sight-threatening conditions may develop silently. Regular comprehensive eye examinations can help detect problems before noticeable symptoms appear.

What Can You Do to Protect Your Sight?

✓ Schedule regular comprehensive eye examinations.

✓ Manage conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure with appropriate medical care.

✓ Wear suitable protective eyewear when necessary.

✓ Avoid self-medication and unprescribed eye remedies.

✓ Seek prompt professional attention for unusual changes in your vision.

Important: Sudden vision loss or a sudden significant change in eyesight requires urgent medical assessment. Do not wait for a routine appointment.

Early Action Starts With You

Blindness Awareness Month is a reminder that protecting your sight begins with awareness, prevention, and timely care. Whether you live in Ikeja, Ikoyi, or elsewhere in Lagos, make your eye health a priority.

Don’t wait until you struggle to see before you take your vision seriously. The earlier an eye problem is identified, the sooner appropriate care can begin.

At Enny Eye Care, we are committed to helping you protect, preserve, and prioritize your sight every day.

What to Expect During an Eye Care Visit

What to Expect During an Eye Care Visit

Have you ever wondered what happens when you visit an eye clinic? Whether it is your first visit or a routine check-up, knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable.

1. A Conversation About Your Eyes

Your eye care professional may ask about your vision, any discomfort you experience, your medical history, medications and family history of eye conditions.

2. Vision Tests

You may be asked to read letters on an eye chart or look through different lenses to assess how clearly you see and whether you need glasses or a change in prescription.

3. Examination of Your Eye Health

Your optometrist will examine your eyes and may recommend additional tests, such as checking eye pressure or examining the retina, depending on your needs.

4. Understanding Your Results

After the examination, your optometrist will explain the findings, discuss any treatment or corrective lenses you may need, and recommend when you should return for another check-up. <Cite refs={[“turn818545search0″,”turn818545search2”]}/>

Gari and Your Eyes: What You Should Know

Gari and Your Eyes: What You Should Know

For millions of Nigerians, gari is more than food. It is breakfast, lunch, a student’s budget meal and a late-night comfort. Soaked with groundnut and sugar, or turned into eba and eaten with a rich soup, it is hard to imagine our tables without it.

But what does gari mean for your eyes? You may have heard that it “spoils your eyesight,” or that it is perfectly harmless. As with many food stories, the truth sits somewhere in between.

Does Gari Damage Your Eyesight?

Properly prepared gari does not damage your eyes. Gari is made from cassava, and raw cassava naturally contains compounds that release cyanide. The traditional processing steps, which include grating, pressing, fermenting and roasting, are what remove most of it.

The concern is not gari itself. It is poorly processed cassava eaten in large amounts, over a long period. Health researchers have linked long-term cyanide exposure from badly processed cassava to nerve damage, including a condition that can affect the optic nerves and impair vision. This has been seen mainly in communities where cassava is eaten daily without proper detoxification.

What this means for you:

  • Buy gari from trusted sources that follow proper fermentation and frying methods
  • Avoid gari that smells unusually sour or “raw”, or looks under-processed
  • Don’t rely on cassava alone as your main food, day after day

What Gari Does and Does Not Give Your Eyes

Gari is mostly carbohydrate. It gives you quick energy, but on its own it contributes very little of the nutrients your eyes depend on, such as vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids.

Plain white gari is not a source of vitamin A. If a diet is built mainly on gari, with little else, the eyes can miss out on important protective nutrients.

Vitamin A deficiency is a well-known cause of poor vision, night blindness and dry eyes, which is why a balanced plate matters.

Yellow Gari: A Better Choice for Vitamin A

Gari that is yellow because it contains red palm oil carries some of the natural vitamin A found in the oil. Researchers are also looking at gari made from biofortified yellow cassava, and at fortified gari, as practical ways to deliver more vitamin A in a food people already love.

Be careful, though. Some yellow gari is simply coloured, and not all of it is rich in vitamin A. The colour is a good clue, not a guarantee.

Making Your Gari Meal Eye-Friendly

You don’t have to give up gari. Build a better plate around it:

  • Add leafy green vegetables such as ugu, efo riro or ewedu, which are rich in vitamin A precursors and antioxidants
  • Include protein, such as fish, eggs, beans or groundnuts, for zinc and other nutrients the eyes need
  • Add colourful vegetables and fruits such as carrots, tomatoes, oranges and pawpaw
  • Use red palm oil in moderation where appropriate
  • Watch your portions. Gari is calorie-dense, and an oversized serving of eba can crowd out the other foods on your plate

A Special Note for People with Diabetes

Gari has a high glycaemic impact, which means it can raise blood sugar quickly. For people living with diabetes, poorly controlled blood sugar increases the risk of diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of vision loss. If you have diabetes, speak with your doctor or a dietitian about portion sizes, and make sure you have your eyes examined at least once a year.

Good nutrition supports healthy eyes, but it cannot replace professional eye care. Many eye conditions, including glaucoma and diabetic eye disease, develop silently. A regular eye examination catches problems early, when they are easiest to manage.

Enjoy your gari, balance your plate, and keep your eye appointments.

Mary Got Her Latest Eyeglasses, and She Can’t Resist Wearing Them!

Mary Got Her Latest Eyeglasses, and She Can’t Resist Wearing Them!

Mary walked out of the optical shop with a new pair of glasses and a smile she couldn’t hide. By evening, she had checked her reflection a dozen times. By morning, they were already on her face before breakfast. Sound familiar?

If you’ve ever picked up a new pair of glasses and wondered why you suddenly can’t stop wearing them, you’re in good company. There’s a good reason behind the excitement.

Why a New Pair Feels So Good

1. Everything is suddenly sharper. When your prescription has changed, even slightly, the world can look softer than it should. A correct, up-to-date pair brings back crisp text, clear faces and brighter colours, often making people realise how much they were straining without knowing it.

2. Your eyes feel less tired. Squinting, headaches and tired eyes at the end of the day are common signs of an outdated prescription. With the right lenses, your eyes don’t have to work as hard, and many people notice the difference within days.

3. You look and feel more confident. The right frame is more than a medical device. It’s part of your personal style. When a pair suits your face and personality, you naturally want to wear it.

4. You can finally do more, more comfortably. Reading, working on a phone or computer, driving at dusk and recognising people across the street all become easier.

Good News: Wearing Them Often Is Exactly What You Should Do

Some people worry that wearing glasses “all the time” will make their eyes dependent on them. That’s a myth. If your eye care professional has prescribed glasses for constant wear, wearing them as directed is what gives you the clearest, most comfortable vision. Leaving them in a drawer won’t strengthen your eyes. It will only leave you squinting.

Tips for Getting the Most from Your New Glasses

  • Give your eyes a few days to adjust. A slight feeling of difference at first is normal, especially with a new prescription or new lens type. If it doesn’t settle, come back and let us check the fit and prescription.
  • Wear them as advised. Your eye care professional will tell you whether they are for full-time use, reading, or distance.
  • Clean them properly. Rinse with lukewarm water, use a mild soap, and dry with a clean microfiber cloth, never your clothes or tissue.
  • Always use a case. Protect your lenses from scratches and a trip under the sofa cushion.
  • Get the fit checked. Glasses that slip, pinch or sit crooked can cause discomfort and affect clarity. A quick adjustment makes a big difference.
  • Book your next check-up. Prescriptions change over time, so a yearly eye examination keeps your vision accurate and catches problems early.

Gentle Reminder

Great vision and great style should go hand in hand. If you’ve been putting off an eye test, or your glasses no longer feel quite right, let our team help you see clearly again. Who knows? You might be the next person who can’t resist wearing your new pair.

Check yearly. See clearly. Visit Enny Eye Care for your eye examination and a pair of glasses you’ll love wearing.
