What Is Astigmatism? Understanding This Common Vision Condition
Astigmatism is more common than many people realize—and it sounds more intimidating than it actually is.
Simply put, astigmatism is when your eye isn’t perfectly round. Instead of being shaped like a soccer ball, the cornea or lens is curved more like a rugby ball. This uneven shape bends light unevenly, causing blurred or distorted vision at any distance.
There are two types:
- Corneal Astigmatism – irregular shape of the front surface of the eye
- Lenticular Astigmatism – irregular shape of the lens inside the eye
Causes of Astigmatism:
- Genetics (most common)
- Eye injury or surgery
- Keratoconus (a rare eye disease)
Can it happen to children? Yes! Children and adults alike can have astigmatism, and early testing is key.
At Enny Eye Care, we provide detailed, gentle exams to detect and manage astigmatism—so you can see life more clearly, with confidence.
