As the joyous and often bustling month of December unfolds, our calendars fill with celebrations, gatherings, and perhaps a touch of year-end reflection. Amidst all the holiday cheer and anticipation, I find myself making a very personal commitment – a “December Promise” – not just to myself, but specifically to my eyes.

As an Ocular Pathologist, my days are spent in meticulous analysis of vision and eye health, but away from the clinic, I, too, navigate the demands of screens, bright lights, and late nights that this season often brings. My promise is a reminder that these incredible organs, which allow me to witness every sparkle and smile of December, deserve unwavering care.

My Pledge for Priceless Sight:

This December, I’m recommitting to simple yet profound practices that uphold the international standards of excellence I advocate for, even in my own life:

  1. Mindful Screen Time: Amidst holiday shopping and virtual greetings, I promise to take regular breaks, apply the 20-20-20 rule, and ensure my blue light filters are always active.
  2. Unwavering UV Protection: Whether it’s a sunny winter day or a bright, snowy landscape, my sunglasses will be my constant companion. UV rays don’t take a holiday!
  3. Hydration & Rest: The festive season can be dehydrating and sleep-depriving. I pledge to prioritize water intake and ensure my eyes get the rest they need to recover.
  4. Nourishing Foods: Enjoying delicious festive meals, but also remembering to incorporate eye-healthy greens and omega-3s.
  5. A Gentle Touch: Remembering the two-handed approach when taking my glasses on and off, and keeping my contacts meticulously clean.

This December Promise isn’t about perfection; it’s about mindful gratitude and consistent care. I invite you to make your own promise to your eyes this month. They work tirelessly for you, capturing every beautiful moment. Let’s give them the thoughtful protection they deserve, ensuring a truly bright and clear start to the new year.
