This morning, the air felt different—dry, dusty, and slightly harsh. On my way to work, I rubbed my eyes more than usual. By noon, a patient walked in saying, “My eyes just feel tired and scratchy lately.” I smiled knowingly. Harmattan had arrived.
During this season, the wind carries fine dust that dries out the eyes and irritates the surface. Even people who’ve never had eye issues start to notice redness, itching, watering, or a gritty feeling—like sand is trapped inside. Contact lens wearers struggle more. Screens feel harder to look at.
I told her what I tell everyone this time of year: blink more, use protective glasses outdoors, stay hydrated, and don’t ignore persistent discomfort. Sometimes, simple dryness can turn into infection if left untreated.
Harmattan doesn’t have to win. A little care goes a long way in keeping your eyes comfortable, clear, and ready for each bright, dusty day.
