The first day I wore my bifocals, I thought something was wrong. The floor felt closer. The stairs looked steeper. I kept tilting my head like I was searching for the “right angle” to see clearly. Reading was suddenly easier, but walking? That felt like a new skill I had to relearn.
My optometrist smiled when I told her. “Your eyes are learning a new way to focus,” she said. And she was right.
For years, my eyes worked hard switching between far and near. Now, the lenses were doing some of that work — but my brain needed time to adjust to the different viewing zones. The slight dizziness and awkward steps weren’t signs of failure. They were signs of adaptation.

Today, the world unites to raise awareness about cancer — and many people don’t realize that cancer can affect the eyes too.
Certain eye cancers, such as ocular melanoma and retinoblastoma (in children), may begin silently with little or no pain. Early signs can include blurred vision, dark spots in vision, eye redness that doesn’t go away, or changes in eye appearance. Because these symptoms are often ignored, routine eye examinations can play a vital role in early detection — sometimes even revealing broader health concerns beyond vision.

It’s a question I get asked surprisingly often at Enny Eye Care, whether I’m in Ikeja or Ikoyi: “Doctor, can I change my eye color?” It often comes from a curious teenager, or sometimes an adult admiring a unique eye shade. And truthfully, it’s a fascinating thought, isn’t it? To simply swap your brown for blue, or green for amber.
I once had a young lady, let’s call her Nneka, who absolutely adored a celebrity’s bright blue eyes and desperately wanted the same. We had a long chat about how our eye color, determined by melanin in the iris, is largely fixed from birth. I explained that while there are colored contact lenses that can temporarily alter your appearance, they come with a strict need for professional fitting and hygiene to avoid serious eye health risks.
We also discussed more extreme (and often dangerous) surgical procedures that claim to change eye color, emphasizing why these are not something we would ever recommend in our practice. My advice to Nneka, and to all my patients in Lagos, Nigeria, is always the same: embrace your natural beauty! And if you want a temporary change, let’s explore safe, professionally fitted colored contacts. Your eye health is far too precious to risk.
